공백의 모양, 파라핀 캐스팅, 2019

<  공백의 모양  >(2019)은 11년을 함께 한 고양이의 죽음에 관한 것이다. 오랜 시간동안 친밀했던 존재를 더 이상 감각할 수 없음을 문득 알아차렸을 때, 나는 손으로 허공을 쓰다듬고 있었다. 손바닥 아래 빈 공백이 너무도 텅 비어있었다.
손의 공백을 파라핀으로 캐스팅하며 <  공백의 모양  >을 만들 때에는, 단단하고 작은 두개골, 유연한 척추와 꼬리, 익숙했던 온기와 촉감 같은 것들이 뜨겁고 물렁한 감각으로 잠시 소환되었지만, 금세 식어 굳어져 곧 죽음을 떠올리게 했다. 공백의 모양으로 남은 조각들은 작은 동물의 뼈마디처럼 보였다. 이 역시 더운 작업실에서 금방이라도 흐물거리며 녹아내릴 것 같았다.

Using paraffin wax, I took a cast of the void under my palm. This wax cast is “The Shape of the Void.” The moment I molded the wax, the hot and soft sensation briefly conjured my cat’s firm and small skull, its supple spine and tail, the warmth and texture so familiar to me, but the paraffin soon cooled and stiffened and reminded me of death. The semi-transparent shards left in my palm looked like the bones that make up the joint of some small animal.
